A .com.py domain tells your customer you're local. For a business selling to Paraguay, it usually builds more trust than a .com, and the process, even though it has its quirks, gets resolved in two or three days if you know what to prepare.
What a .com.py is and who runs it
Domains ending in .py are run by NIC.PY, Paraguay's domain registry. The emails for the process come from an address at the Centro Nacional de Computación (National Computing Center) of the UNA (Universidad Nacional de Asunción). There are no resellers involved: the application is made directly on the NIC.PY website.
Besides .com.py, other endings exist too, like .org.py, .edu.py, .gov.py, .net.py, .coop.py, and .mil.py. Each one is for a type of organization. For a business, .com.py is the right one.
How much a .com.py domain costs
As of September 2026, delegating a .com.py costs Gs. 150,000 per year, and renewal costs the same. On top of that comes the payment method's fee: paying through homebanking, under "Pago de servicios" (bill payment), the fee we pay is Gs. 3,300. That's Gs. 153,300 per year in total.
One important detail: NIC.PY doesn't accept a regular bank transfer. Payment is made as a bill payment ("pago de servicios") from homebanking, or through the methods listed on their rates page.
What you need ready before you start
The NIC.PY form is long and doesn't save drafts. If you're missing something halfway through, you start over. Gather this beforehand:
- The name you want, with no accents or "ñ": only letters, numbers, and dashes. Check that it's available in the NIC.PY search tool.
- The DNS servers the domain will point to. Your hosting provider gives you these (for example, Cloudflare gives you two nameservers when you create the zone). The form has options to add these later, but if you already have them, your domain works as soon as it's activated.
- The registrant's details, which the form calls the Organización Responsable (Responsible Organization): the legal business name exactly as it appears with the SET (Paraguay's tax authority), the RUC (the Paraguayan tax ID) with its check digit, the address, the city, and a phone number.
- Three contacts: administrative, technical, and billing. Each one with a name, email, and ID document. They can be the same person or different people.
- A justification: an honest sentence about what the site is for.
Step by step
- Search for the name on the NIC.PY site and confirm it's available.
- Create the zone with your DNS provider to get the nameservers. You can create the zone before the domain exists.
- Fill out the registration form. Enter the domain name first and the nameservers after, because the form decides which fields to ask for based on the domain.
- Technical verification. NIC.PY checks within the next 24 hours that the DNS servers respond correctly.
- Reply to the confirmation email. It arrives at the address you entered as the registrant. You have 8 days to reply; otherwise the application is dropped.
- Approval review. Between 24 and 48 hours.
- Pay. You have 15 days from approval. The domain activates once the payment is confirmed.
If you reply to the email the same day, the whole process takes between 48 and 72 hours, start to finish.

The receipt is issued to the billing contact
NIC.PY's rates page makes this clear: the receipt is issued with the billing contact's information. It doesn't matter who actually pays. If you pay and the billing contact is someone else, the invoice won't work for your own bookkeeping.
The domain owner is the Organización Responsable
Whoever appears as the Organización Responsable is the domain's owner. If someone registers the domain under their own name "to make it faster," the domain is theirs, not yours. Always check this.
There's no control panel
NIC.PY doesn't have a panel where you log in and change things. Changes, like pointing the domain to different servers, are requested through a form and signed by one of the contacts. That's why the technical contact should be someone who's going to be available: your website provider or someone you trust.
The fields have strict rules
The address can't be longer than 60 characters, the legal business name doesn't accept parentheses or apostrophes, and the RUC has to include the check digit. If the form rejects a field without explaining why, it's almost always one of these.
.com.py or .com: which one is right for you
| .com.py | .com | |
|---|---|---|
| Trust with Paraguayan customers | High, it says you're local | Good |
| Cost | Gs. 150,000 per year plus fee | In dollars, varies by registrar |
| Process | Form, email confirmation, and approval | Instant, online |
| Requirements | Registrant's details and contacts | Just an account and a card |
| If you sell abroad | Works, but it says Paraguay | Neutral |
For a business selling to Paraguay, .com.py is the natural choice. If your customer is in another country, a .com might make more sense, and sometimes it's worth having both pointing to the same site.
If you'd rather not handle the process
In our website package, the .com.py domain is included the first year: we register it under your business's name, with the servers configured, and we notify you before every renewal. All you do is reply to the confirmation email that NIC.PY sends.
